Homeless Outreach
One Step at a Time
With our organization’s mission always in mind, we strive to find new strategies for dealing with this challenge. Homeless Outreach is something that we take very seriously, and we are proud to be parters with our local Women's Shelter. The Women's shelter houses over 300 women, providing them with not only a place to stay, but unconditional support, love, and guidance as well. Purpose
Menstrual health is not commonly a topic that is openly discussed. It is perceived as an uncomfortable subject, even though it is a natural, biological occurrence. This lack of conversation has led to a stigma around periods, preventing people from taking action towards tackling a prevalent issue: the lack of access to feminine hygiene products for homeless women. Their struggle is understandable, as feminine hygiene products and medication are expensive, and income is severely limited. We stumbled upon a video that focused on this topic, which showed a majority of women claiming that their period held them back from taking advantage of crucial educational and economic opportunities. Through further research, we found that many large cities, such as New York, were already taking steps towards improving public access to menstrual hygiene products. With our local community’s rapid growth, it was disappointing to see no definite action being taken to address this issue. This inspired The Flo Project to arise. Whether it be hanging posters, posting on social media, speaking at charity events, or setting up booths at social gatherings, The Flo Project increases awareness about homeless women and their struggle. By stimulating discussion about menstrual health, which will begin the elimination of stigma associated with it, it encourages donation of menstrual items to aid in solving the problem.
